There are very few things to make my skin crawl and leave me with the sense of needing an adult. Just the idea of these characters makes me feel like an army of slugs are marching up and down my body and I can’t get them off. I have 3 characters in mind while writing this; Lord Cob, Hisoka, and Gauche.
I don’t creep out easily. After watching the studio Ghibli classic movie Tales from Earthsea recently, I was creeped out beyond comfort. Tales from Earthsea is about the land of Earthsea, and the dark looming force that threatens life in Earthsea. A powerful young wizard by the name of Sparrowhawk seeks out the evil that is going to take his home away from him and put a stop to it. Now this Dark Looming Force that I speak of is the main villain, Lord Cob. Lord Cob was so creepy he made my skin crawl. I’m unsure why, but the Japanese tend to use males with androgynous features whose animation style seems to be different from the rest of its cast as an indicator that something is wrong with them.
We’ve seen this in anime such as Naruto with Orochimaru,Frieza from Dragonball Z, and we’ve also seen it in cartoons like the Powerpuff Girls with Him. Lord Cob definitely fits the bill of androgyny. Now insert his voice. 9 times out of 10 when you hear a character that has both the androgynous look and voice, you know that you have achieved a flawless victory on the creep meter. Then you add sneaky, deceptive, manipulative, the use of black magic, and he snatching princesses out of bed you know that you have a villain whose creep factor is on 8 million. Not to mention this little puddle transformation he has.
With the talk of androgyny this brings us to our next character, Hisoka of Hunter X Hunter. Androgynous, Clown, Murderer, with a fetish for little boys. Need I say more? Hisoka’s fetish isn’t for little boys per say but for powerful people. The shows protagonists Gon and Killua are kids and Hisoka takes a pedophile liking to them. Even so, to the point of standing there in his childbirth glory, completely exposing birthday suit to the pair. Not to mention he dresses like a member of the Ringling Brother’s Street ball team with his cut off shirt. Sprinkle in his cool power with the cards and we have game, set, match. Blouses!
The last member of team creep is Gauche of Black Clover. I know people are outraged I didn’t say Orochimaru or the numerous other characters, but with this last one I had to step away from the androgynous factor and peek into the world of incest. Yes, I said it, incest. Incest in anime has become synonymous with the hentai and ecchi fan base. It takes the cake in Black Clover though. Gauche looks like your traditional hard ass punk that has a bad attitude and the looks match the personality. His voice is pretty cool too; he sounds exactly how he looks. The first words out of his mouth are, “That’s enough you two! What if the ruckus you curs are causing wakes up my little sister, you dumb assess?!” To which another character responds, “Oh, shut up, sister lover!” I’m like ok this guy must really care about his sister. But during formal introductions this is his face and the first time you associate a name and face to the voice heard
“Hey! Look! This is my little sister Marie. She’s an angel. Listen well. If you lay a finger on Marie, I’ll kill you.”
Now this just sounds like an over protective brother. It’s understandable, until you notice the whole scene. Bleeding from the nose in anime suggests lust or sexual excitement. This is why he made the list above all the others.
Honorable mentions: Gordon (Black Clover), Orochimaru (Naruto), Minatsuki (Deadman Wonderland), Johan (Monster), Shuu (Tokyo Ghoul), Shou (Full Metal Alchemist), Rabbit (Juni Taisen), and Caster (Fate: Zero).
Chime in and let us know who your top 3 creepiest characters are or characters that creeped you out in general.
